Introduction to the College of Foreign Studies of Jinan University
With the predecessor of “Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures” established in 1927, the College of Foreign Studies was founded in 2001. Historically, well-known scholars such as Ye Gongchao, Liang Shiqiu, Qian Zhongshu, Xu Guozhang, Zeng Zhaoke andWeng Xianliang have taught in the Department. It consists of five departments: English Language and Literature (National First-Class discipline construction site), Japanese Language and Literature (National First-Class discipline construction site), Business English (Provincial First-Class discipline construction site), French Language and Literature, Spanish Language and Literature and the Department of College English Teaching, which is responsible for the teaching of public foreign languages in the university. There are six research institutes, namely: Jinan University Intercultural Translation Center, Language and Cognitive Research Center, Foreign Literature Institute, Linguistics Institute, Japanese Language and Culture Institute and Foreign Language Teaching Institute.
The college now has a second level doctoral program in “International Communication”. As early as 1981, the discipline of foreign language and literature became the first master’s degree program in China. There are master’s degree programs in secondary disciplines such as Foreign and Applied Linguistics, English language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI). Discipline construction has a long history and profound accumulation. In recent years, based on the characteristics of overseas Chinese universities and the advantages of comprehensive universities, we have actively carried out interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. The college has 162 teaching staff, including 132 full-time teachers (80 teachers with doctoral degrees); there are 24 professors and 7 doctoral supervisors in the school. At present, the college has 1,152 full-time students, including 845 undergraduates, 307 postgraduates, and 443 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries. Most of the faculty members (and all of the supervisors) have overseas study and research backgrounds.
