讲座摘要:

The past half century has seen the English language teaching (ELT) methodology shifting from one paradigm to another, leading to a tremendous enrichment of pedagogical practices in the English language classroom.  This seminar will discuss and demonstrate how the shifting trends in ELT pedagogy are materialized in the academic ESL classroom, particularly in the following areas: (a) a renewed definition of language competence: from general English language proficiency to academic English language proficiency; (b) an extended model communicative language teaching: from general communicative language teaching to differentiated, task-/project-based learning; (c) a restructuring of curriculum development: from form-focused syllabus design to integrated, multisyllabic, and thematic course design; (d) a reengineering of language evaluation: from testing to assessment and from summative assessment to formative assessment; and (e) a reconceptualization of teacher development: from a focus on native speaker competency to user competency.

Practical examples are provided.  Active participation is anticipated.
