Prof. Ling-chi Wang was born in Xiamen, Fujian, China. He received his elementary education in Xiamen, secondary education in Hong Kong, undergraduate education in music and philosophy at Hope College and graduate education in ancient Semitic languages and literature at Princeton Seminary, University of Chicago, and University of California, Berkeley. He taught Asian American and ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley from 1969 until he retired on June 30, 2006. From 2006 to 2012, he taught part-time in his department, developing two new courses: Asian Diaspora and Chinese Americans in Science and Technology.

Prof. Wang believes strongly in combining academic research and teaching with social and political engagement. For this reason, he has been active since 1966 in the fight to expand civil and political rights of racial minorities in the U.S. and in the development of public policies affecting education, employment, health, politics, and the media. In education in particular, he advanced the rights of linguistic minorities, bilingual education, Asian language education, fair college admission policies, and curricular diversity. He was instrumental in persuading the College Board to develop SAT Achievement and AP tests for Asian languages.
